Yet another blinged out iPhone 3GS

Looks like the iPhone 3GS is a prime candidate for getting all blinged out, as we have yet another effort by Computer Choppers that offers the Midas combination of gold and diamonds. Dubbed the Limited Edition 24kt Gold & Diamonds iPhone 3GS, you get 24k gold alongside a diamond-studded Apple logo. No idea on pricing, but chances are this would be able to buy a few family cars with some change left over if you decide to put your money on other frivolous purchases.

AT&T Finally Allows 3G Streaming For SlingPlayer On iPhone

The lack of 3G streaming on SlingPlayer for the iPhone was a painful affair to many users, and it probably was just confirmation to many that AT&T was having more than a little trouble handling the load of data brought upon it by the iPhone. But now that VoIP is not taboo on the iPhone anymore, AT&T seems to have given into SlingPlayer’s demands, and said that it has been testing an optimized version of the app on its 3G network since December. Sling states that the dynamic bandwidth adjustment would keep the app from slowing AT&T’s network down. This is certainly great news to iPhone users all around, and if you’re using the $30 version of the app, you’ll be entitled to a free upgrade, which should be available as soon as it gets the App Store seal of approval.

First Mass-produced Camera Heading For Auction

First Mass-produced Camera Heading For Auction

Are you a huge camera collector? Well, if you are, you’ve probably heard of the Giroux Daguerreotype camera, the world’s first commercially produced camera. This is probably your best chance to get it, as the camera, produced in 1839, will be going up for auction on 29th May in Vienna for a starting price of just €200,000 ($277,000) at the auction house WestLicht Photographica Auction. It’s estimated that the camera might end up going for as high as €700,000 ($970,000). Considering that we’ve seen an iPhone go for $3.2 million, this should be pocket change for some people, right? The Daguerreotype camera sports a sliding, or “double box” body. You’ll be able to achieve a fixed focus by pulling the smaller inner box away from the front-mounted achromatic landscape lens. It’s said to be in excellent original condition, and will even come with the original 24-page instruction manual, which is written in German. Do you think this camera deserves a place in your collection, or would you be better off putting that money aside for the super expensive iPhone 3GS Supreme?

Apple Files Patent On LED Backlight Technique

Apple Files Patent On LED Backlight Technique

Apple certainly is putting a lot of thought into display technology, and if the company continues to come up with interesting products like the iPhone and iPad, having a great display will certainly be essential. The latest patent is titled “LED Backlight Driver Synchronization and Power Reduction”, which was filed just a short while after Apple unveiled its LED-backlit iPad. Apple’s patent looks to use a plurality of LED strings, rather than a single LED string, allowing them to be driven at a higher frequency than that of the LCD refresh signal, avoiding unwanted visual effects like flickering, shimmering or banding on LED-backlit LCD screens. Shimmering is described as a sparkling effect that occurs when a moving dark object meets or intersects with a lighter one. A good example would be when tree leaves are blowing in the wind, the leaves may appear to artificially shimmer at the edges of the leaves.

Foxconn working on WAPI iPhone for China Unicom

Foxconn working on WAPI iPhone for China Unicom

China Unicom carries the iPhone in that part of the world, and we now have news that they have comissioned Foxconn to come up with a WAPI version, where it is known as the N88 (sounds suspiciously like a handset from Nokia, eh?). Apparently, the 4th generation iPhone has also been dubbed the N90, but that is digressing. Just as you are scratching your heads and wondering what WAPI is, it is a Chinese National Standard for Wireless, that can also play nice with standard Wi-Fi. WAPI is required no thanks to China’s rather strict regulations that required Wi-Fi to be removed from China Unicom iPhones, so hopefully the WAPI version, when released, might help boost iPhone sales there by a mile.

Motorola Droid Costs 187.75

Motorola Droid Costs 187.75

According to the folks over at iSuppli, Motorola’s current jewel, Droid, has a $187.75 Bill of Materials (BOM) and manufacturing cost. It breaks down to $179.11 in terms of electronic components, and $8.64 to manufacture. These figures only cover the cost of component and manufacturing costs, they don’t take into account the expenses such as software and royalties. Those figures are awfully close to its closest rivals, such as Google’s Nexus One ($174.15) and Apple’s iPhone 3GS ($179). Who do you think will be the victor in the end?

Steadicam For Your iPhone Video Recording Fix

Do you happen to use your iPhone to record videos often? If you do, you might be intrigued by the Steadicam, which is a rather interesting looking accessory which will help you steady the ship, and help you avoid ending up with videos that are bouncing up and down. Of course, the size of it probably means that you won’t be bringing it around with you, but we’re not here to tell you what you should or should not carry around with your iPhone, so it’s your call.

Google Nexus One Parts Cost $174

Google Nexus One Parts Cost $174

The folks at iSuppli have taken a closer look at Google’s Nexus One, and estimate that the phone’s raw parts cost $174, which is a whole $5 less than the cost of Apple’s 16GB iPhone 3GS when new. Despite its lower cost, the Nexus One sports a faster processor, larger and AMOLED-based touchscreen, as well as more RAM. Apparently the price difference may be due to the Nexus One using a 4GB removable microSDHC card, compared to the 16GB built-in storage of the iPhone. Interesting figures, but we’re already wondering how much Apple’s iSlate tablet and iPhone 4G will cost manufacture.

AirStash offers wireless storage for your iPhone

Those who are content with their 32GB iPhone 3GS, good - but there are still many out there with the much older 8GB iPhones from the first generation, and to increase the amount of storage space without buying a new handset? That is made possible with the USB-powered AirStash, where it can not only hook up to the iPhone wirelessly but with other handsets as well. No idea on how well the AirStash will work, but it does tickle the imagination as to how well such a device would be received. We're looking at it to be more of a novelty than anything else. If you want your old iPhone to be a portable media player as well, you're better off getting a new iPod.

Is An 8GB iPhone 3GS Coming?

Is An 8GB iPhone 3GS Coming?

Could Apple be offering an 8GB iPhone 3GS sometime soon? While there hasn’t been any official word on such a model, a German shopper has recently reported that when he purchased a refurbished 8GB iPhone 3G, he received the phone will and good, but the label on the back indicated an “iPhone 3GS v2.2 8GB”. The model (A1231) and part number (MB490DN/A) indicate the older model correctly, but the “iPhone 3GS” moniker appears on other places of the packaging, which certainly seems to hint that such a phone might exist. If Apple were to release an 8GB iPhone 3GS, it will certainly help it fend off the recent challenges on its dominance by cheaper phones such as the HTC Droid Eris and Palm Pixi.

Unreal Engine 3 on iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS has been touted to be the fastest iPhone yet, and apparently it is good enough to run a version of the Unreal Engine 3 by Epic - yes, you read that right, it is the similar engine featured in high powered games like Gears of War 2. While the iPhone 3GS has such capability, this news is somewhat dampened by the fact that there are no games or licensees announced who will be using the engine - yet. We had told you that the 3GS would see more and more such cool stuff overtime and this is far from over. Video in the full post.

Vodafone To Offer iPhone From Jan 14th 2010

We already knew that Vodafone would be selling the iPhone in the UK in early 2010, but what most people didn’t know is how early the carrier would be selling it. Reports have filtered in that the magical date will be set for January 14th 2010, which is less than a month away. Vodafone has also been preparing its network for the inevitable additional demand of data that iPhone users will use. The pricing offered by Vodafone seems to more or less match similar offerings from O2 and Orange. One thing users will want to take note is that data usage for both consumer and business contracts will be capped at 1GB a month and you’ll be able to get tethering with plans from £5 a month.

$3.2m iPhone 3GS Supreme

The iPhone 3GS is generally something that draws the attention of people, despite it being owned by many people. So what do you do to make it stand out even more? Well, you invest £1.92m (about $3.2m) and get the iPhone 3GS “Supreme. This insanely priced phone was created by Goldstriker’s Stuart Hughes, and took 10 months to create. It was commissioned by an anonymous Australian gold mining magnate, so you can understand his love for gold. The phone boasts a whole bunch of gold and diamonds, most noticeably the single cut rare 7.1 carat diamond in the home button.

Tesco To Offer Apple iPhone Too

Now that Apple’s iPhone isn’t exclusive to O2 anymore in the UK, it seems that everybody is clamoring for a piece of the pie. Next up is the announcement that Tesco has confirmed that it will be offering the iPhone 3G and 3GS on its O2-powered Tesco Mobile network. Unfortunately, just because the iPhone is being sold in Tesco, doesn’t mean that you’ll get it at the usual heavily discounted Tesco price. Bummer.

iPhone Sales Increasing In Europe

iPhone Sales Increasing In Europe

It seems that the increased number of iPhone carriers over in France has led to a boost in sales for the cell phone. This indicates that a similar situation might happen in the UK, which Apple will certainly be hoping for. A report shows that Apple’s value market share in France made a significant jump, thanks to the phone’s availability on Bouygues Telecom and SFR. With O2’s exclusivity deal expiring earlier this month, Orange has launched the device and managed a first day sales of 30,000 units, putting the iPhone well on course to dominate the world.

App Store Takes Off In China

While most people would think that the lack of Wi-Fi, coupled with sales of “only” 5,000 iPhones at launch would be disappointing, it seems that the App Store is doing rather well in China, despite all the hurdles that it’ll have to clear. Let’s not forget that the current official iPhone in China only sports 3G internet and users who want to purchase stuff from the App Store will need to have a credit card from a Chinese bank. Of course, if the news that there will be a new iPhone sporting Wi-Fi in China will certainly help boost the App Store business in that region and the possibility that the iPhone will be released on China Mobile will make it even better.

Few Thousand iPhones Stolen In Belgian Heist

If you find that the iPhone 3G or 3GS that you ordered from Mobistar is taking a long time to reach you, maybe it’s been stolen (of course, not directly from you). According to latest reports, some thieves climbed a fire ladder to get to the roof of the warehouses where the iPhones were kept, and got away with about 3000 to 4000 iPhones, estimated worth about $3,000,000. Mobistar has apparently contacted their supplier and should be getting a new batch of iPhones within a few days, but the company is rather eager to restock, before their currently inventory runs out.
