Pre-orders for the Kindle with US & International Wireless are going for $279 and shipping will begin on October 19th. Any of you folks outside of the US planning to get this? Kindle 2 experiences another price drop
Posted on October 7, 2009 1:57 AM

The Amazon Kindle 2 has received yet another price drop - touching an all time low of $259 from its precious price of $299. This makes a 28% cut since its debut from 8 months ago. Guess Amazon is feeling the heat from competitors such as Sony, Google, Plastic Logic and others who have released e-book readers of some sort in recent times. According to Jeff Bezos, Amazon is in a strong position to reduce its pricing due to larger production and sales volume which has resulted in cost reduction, and these will be passed down to the customers. Folks who picked up the Kindle 2 for $299 in the last month can always call Amazon Kindle support and ask for a $40 rebate - that's nice fo them - how come Apple doesn't offer such a plan with their iPods?

Amazon Kindle 2 In-Depth Review

By Simon Barber*
I have just spent a week with a Kindle 2 Amazon lent me to review. Tomorrow I have to send it back and will be sorry to see it go. I am fairly certain that I will not be able to resist the temptation to buy one of my own although I do continue to have reservations about the $350 price tag and the longevity of the device.
On the latter score, I find it intensely irritating that I should be asked to pay $65, a fifth of the purchase price, to extend the warranty from one year to two. That is either a rip-off or, if an actuarially based insurance premium, a worrying omen.
I buy and read a lot of books, both for pleasure and for work. This past week I was preparing a column on Cass Sunstein, the University of Chicago, and latterly Harvard, law professor President Obama has just appointed head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the White House. Sunstein is a prolific author, though perhaps not yet a household name. I had no trouble locating Kindle editions of his works on the Amazon website at $9.99 a pop, beamed instantly and without additional charge to my device via Sprint’s wireless EVDO network. Dead tree editions, delivered, would have been closer to $30 and would have arrived too late to have been of any use to me.
Toshiba Biblio Ebook Reader

The Amazon Kindle and its sequel have made a noticeable mark in the lives of many, while promoting the idea that it is effective and can turn a profit. This has prompted KDDI and Toshiba to team up, delivering the Biblio ebook reader in the Japanese market. Using a software known as Book Player, you can store around 5,000 ebooks which are downloadable via KDDI's EZ Book service on the 7GB hard drive. Other features include an integrated 5-megapixel camera, an electronic dictionary to check out words you don't understand on the spot, and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for easy download of books wherever you are. There is no word on pricing or availability, so hopefully we will find out soon enough. How do you think this will fare against the Kindle 2? Kindle 2 Gets New Colors

ColorWare is one company that aims to make life much more, er, colorful with their expertise of draping devices in new shades apart from the stock colors it comes in. The Kindle 2 is the latest gadget to receive the ColorWare treatment, where you'll be able to choose from a customization page to make sure that various parts of the Kindle 2 will come in the exact shade you want it. Sending in an existing Kindle 2 to ColorWare will cost $199, while those who want to pick up a new customized one from ColorWare themselves will have to fork out $599. Expensive, but then again being at the front of the crowd often costs, doesn't it?
