Casio Exilim EX-Z550 digital camera

[CES 2010] You can expect a deluge of product announcements from companies come CES, and it is no different with Casio as they just unveiled the Exilim EX-Z550 digital camera which looks and sounds like a pretty decent entry-level digital camera. After all, you definitely can't argue with 14.1 effective megapixels (that seems to be the standard these days) with a wide-angle 26 mm 4X optical zoom lens, a clear 2.7" LCD display, CCD-shift image stabilization and HD Movie function. It will also feature the new EXILIM Engine 5.0 that speeds up image processing speed by up to 30% compared to its previous iteration, helping remove noise from photos in high sensitivity mode that results in great looking images.

Casio Exilim EX-Z2000 digital camera

[CES 2010] Casio has outed its latest 14.1 megapixel digital camera in the form of the EX-Z2000 from its Exilim series, packing in a wide-angle 26 mm 5X optical zoom and a 3.0" Super Clear LCD display into a relatively compact, thin body. You get CCD-shift image stabilization and HD Movie capability with the EX-Z2000, where it boasts an interesting and fresh form finished in natural curves which are guaranteed to capture the attention of your eyes (as well as throw some envious looks your way by newbies). The newly developed EXILIM Engine 5.0 is included in the EX-Z2000, allowing it to process images up to 30% faster without compromising on image quality thanks to advanced color reproduction and rich tonal gradation that results from noise removal from photos in high sensitivity mode.

Kodak EasyShare M580 digital camera

[CES 2010] The world will never tire of consumer-level digital cameras, and Kodak continues to cater to this crowd with the EasyShare M580 which comes with a unique feature - the Share Button that offers quick and easy uploads of your snapped photos to Flickr, Facebook, Kodak Gallery and even YouTube (for videos, of course). Apart from that, other features include a Smart Face Recognition capability, a 3" bright LCD display, Image Stabilization, Kodak Color Science Ttechnology, a 14-megapixel 8x Schneider-Kreuznach optical zoom wide angle lens and an integrated HDMI connector for instant output to a HDTV-ready device. Expect the Kodak EasyShare M580 to hit the market in light blue, purple and pink colors this coming April for $199 each.

Kodak Pulse Digital Frame

Kodak Pulse Digital Frame

[CES 2010] Kodak, being an old hand when it comes to photography (having moved to the digital format), is now back with their Pulse digital frame. In line with other digital photo frames of the times, the Pulse will feature Wi-Fi connectivity alongside a personal email address that allows you to remotely send a photo over via a cellphone or computer to keep the image library there fresh and up-to-date. A full touchscreen display is also thrown into the mix for easier navigation and browsing, but unfortunately you are limited to just 512MB of internal memory with nary a USB port or memory card slot mentioned in the press release to augment that figure, but checking it out on the showfloor proved otherwise, thanks to a tip from our reader. On the other hand, the 7" LED backlit display features Kodak Color Science technology for a faithful color reproduction as well as 800 x 600 resolution to keep your memories looking sharp.

Sony Digital Frame with built-in printer

Sony Digital Frame with built-in printer

This Sony DPP-F700 digital frame has a built-in color that can output 6x4", 300dpi photos in just 45 seconds. The main display is a 7" LCD screen with a 800x480 resolution. It's not a touch display, but the buttons on the right side of the frame will let you edit photos and do basic corrections before printing. The photos can come from flashcards (SD, CF, Memory Stick...) or via USB, from a PC.

I've never felt the “urge” to print something while I was looking at my Sony DPF-D80 photo frame, but may be someone out there did. Right now, it seems like it solves a problem that doesn't exist. Maybe re-branding it as a fancy portable printer would make more sense. Either way, what do you think?

Sandisk Extreme Pro compact flash cards

Sandisk Extreme Pro compact flash cards

You might think of Compact Flash (CF) cards as a commodity, and it's mostly true, except for the very high-end where the Sandisk Extreme Pro sits. Aimed at the professionals (and enthusiast) photographers, the "Extreme Pro" series can read and write twice as fast as the previous generation of Sandisk Extreme CFs. We're talking about a peak rate of 90MB/s versus 45MB/s. Sandisk has achieved this by using a new memory controller that can read/write twice as much data. It works like a RAID0 dual-SSD setup, but inside a flash card. Note that to get the maximum speed out the card with a computer, you will need to use Sandisk's ExpressCard adapter as USB or even Firewire won't be (effectively) as fast.

Samsung WB5000 with 24X zoom, for Q4 2009

Samsung is getting ready to show its WB5000 digital camera that has a 24X optical zoom (26mm lens) - who doesn't love that? That's not it, the camera can also shoot in RAW format for those who are perfectionists when it comes to aperture and color balance. They can now correct everything from the comfort of their computers. The Samsung WB5000 captures 12.5 Megapixel images and 720p videos. Just like many modern non-DSLR cameras, it has some smartness built-in like face detection.

Casio Exilim EX-Z450 packs some punch

Casio Exilim EX-Z450 packs some punch

Casio gets serious in the mid-range with the Exilim EX-Z450 compact camera. It uses the Exilim Engine 4.0, which is Casio's best image processor for this type of point and shoot cameras. With it, the camera can track subjects and smiles to focus on the "right thing" - that's the theory at least, we haven't tried it. There are a few things that caught our attention in the specifications of the Casio Exilim EX-Z450:

It should be better than most compact cameras in dim lighting, thanks to its f2.8 lens. It also has an image stabilization system, so that you can shoot with a slower shutter speed. When the subject is far, the 4X optical zoom can help you get there and, on paper, it has a much better battery life (almost 2x) than lower-end models like the EX-Z90. It costs around $200 and will be available in early October.

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj projector camera, live photos, schematics

If the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj caught your attention with its integrated projector, you should take a look at this. Gearlog has published the internal schematics that shows how Nikon was able to put a projector in there. At the same time, Pocketlint has managed to get their hands on the device itself, so now you can see live images of the beast. Check the photo gallery and go to sites mentioned above to see even more images.

Nikon D300S Leaked By... Nikon

According to Nikon Rumors, the following screen capture comes from Nikon itself and shows an interesting reference to a Nikon D300S that seems to confirm the existence of such a model. Also, there's a hint about the SD card compatibility on the lower-left. They have compared the screen capture to the existing D300 display and can confirm that D300S does not appear anywhere in the current D300 model.

Double Twist's Ad Ripped Down by BART before WWDC; too dark, really?

vDouble Twist's Ad Ripped Down by BART before WWDC; too dark, really?

DoubleTwist is founded by former hacker "DVD Jon" Johansen Lech, known for breaking the movie protection code at age 16, allowing anybody to rip a DVD to a computer. He was sued and acquitted in Oslo. DoubleTwist, a start-up based in San Francisco, delivers "the cure for iPhone envy", breaking your iTunes catalog free from Apple devices: you can share media files across phones and non-Apple devices easily, check the DoubleTwist page.

A DoubleTwist ad was put up on Friday afternoon at the BART station just below the Apple store (photo on the left), but it was taken down shortly after the co-founders of DoubleTwist went over to check it out. They were told by BART that the ad was "too dark" (i.e. not letting enough light into the station - the ad is actually transparent). According to DoubleTwist, the ad is supposed to be erected again on Tuesday, but it was originally scheduled to go up on Monday morning for the start of the WWDC.

The ad placement is brilliant and we wonder if Apple had anything to do with this, knowing how controlling the company is with its own brand. Read more on Jon's blog.

Sony a500 and a550 Leaked From Sony Website. Will They Record HD Video?

An eagle-eyed user has noticed that the Sony a500 and a550 references were in a listbox that is part of a camera registration process. There are actually four references: DSLRA500, DSLRA500S, DSLRA550, DSLRA550S.

At the moment, there's not much more information but it is believed that the upcoming alpha 500 Series will have video-recording capabilities, unlike the recent Sony alpha models. This was spotted on sonystyle.ca. [via photorumors]

Photo Finder: Killer Face Recognition Facebook App

What could better fit Facebook than a face recognition application developed by Face.com?

Facebook has recently become the first photo sharing website in the world, hosting over 15 billion photos and adding 850 million more each month; so, helping people retrieve photos of themselves and their friends makes perfect sense. Trying Photo Finder was also a fun and addictive activity, I almost forgot to write my article... I was amazed how fast my unknown (untagged) photos were retrieved although the lighting condition and the quality were so bad in some of them. According to Face.com, a few thousand people have used the application in closed alpha for only 30 days, and just from that group, 400 million photos have been scanned and more than 700,000 people have been identified.
