Qualcomm parades smartbook

Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs has lifted the curtain on their first Snapdragon-powered smartbook which will arrive Stateside today. The hardware is provided by Lenovo while AT&T will be the carrier of choice. With the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform running within, you also get integrated wireless features and graphics with 720p HD video capabilities for a complete portable entertainment package. This chipset will also be made available for smartphones, helping bridge the digital divide between cellphones and notebooks in the future. No idea on the pricing of this puppy though, so hopefully AT&T will offer a decent subsidized price.

Asus Smartbook delayed

Asus has announced that they will be delaying their recently announced Smartbook from the first quarter to the second of next year. While they did not give any reason for the delay, we are also kept in the dark concerning the availability of the Smartbook on UK shores as well. There is also no word on the kind of processor used within alongside the operating system, but an Asus representative did mention that Android is an option.

Asus Smartbook to arrive as early as next year

Asus does not want to be left behind in the smartbook race (moving on from smartphones), where their first Android-powered smartbook ought to hit retail shelves by early 2010. Powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon chip and the Google mobile OS, this smartbook will probably retail for around $185, although at that price point there is no further word on the type of hardware you will find within. Could this prove to be a decent challenge against other netbooks that are currently dominated by Intel and its Atom line of processors?

C-motech Mangrove smartbook

The Gitex Technology Week 2009 in Dubai has seen the release of the Mangrove smartbook from C-motech, where it comes with a 7" display (touchscreen, obviously), powered by Qualcomm's next generation SnapDragon processor that ought to give it more than enough processing muscle to get most of your work done in a jiffy. It will run on Windows Mobile 6.5, although we hope the user interface will be cleaned up compared to what you see here.

Marvell Armada mobile processors just launched

Marvell Armada mobile processors just launched

Marvell just launched a family of mobile application processors* called Armada aimed at mobile devices like handheld or portable computers (smarttops). The Family has 4 models named Armada 100, Armada 500, Armada 600 and Armada 1000. As you can guess each of them address a different segment depending on the performance, thermal and power requirements. Here are the highlights:

  • Armada 100: for low-intensity applications like printers, GPS, desktop phones etc...
  • Armada 500 and 600: handsets, MID. Supports 1080p decode, 3D graphics WUXGA resolution and runs at 1.2Ghz maximum.
  • Armada 1000: for set top boxes and possibly smart tops. We guess that this design requires more cooling. It is a dual-core CPU, can decode 1080p movies and has graphics acceleration.

All processors have been designed to be low-power and have plenty of in/out functions like USB, Ethernet, SATA, PCIe, Flashcard readers and so on. They are also compatible with popular memory sub-systems like DDR2 or DDR3.

Sony Ericsson could release smartbook

Sony Ericsson could release smartbook

Sony Ericsson doesn't seem ready to branch out to other hardware markets, although they have been edging towards the personal computing niche with their XPERIA X1 smartphone. Word has it that the handset manufacturer is raring to go on a new smartbook, powered by an ARM processor while offering superior battery life and mobile broadband connectivity compared to a netbook, coming in a slim form factor. It won't run on the full Windows operating system though due to hardware limitations, and will definitely be less powerful than a standard netbook. There is no official word from Sony Ericsson on this matter just yet, but let us hope that they will issue a statement concerning its existence (or not) to quell any rumors making their rounds.

Freescale Smartbook Concept Designs

Freescale Smartbook Concept Designs

Freescale Semiconductor is hard at work on future possible smartbook designs, where the company has already commissioned half a dozen prototypes to date including the model you see above, boasting a touchscreen display complete with QWERTY-pads that jut out from both left and right sides. The Smartbook platform will rely on ARM-based processors, and are touted to offer superior battery life for an added advantage over regular netbooks. Hopefully such zany designs will be out sooner rather than later, offering all that they can without compromising on performance and endurance. Unfortunately, current working hardware prototypes haven't been that convincing to date.
