Nokia drops S60 for Maemo

Could the Symbian S60 operating system be dying a slow but sure death? That is what most people would think with word going around, stating that Nokia will include Maemo on all of its flagship N Series smartphones down the road instead of the old faithful, Symbian S60. It won't be immediate though, but gradual with the transition being brought to completion when 2012 rolls around. Well, at least the S60 can still find a home on the X Series and E Series.

Update: Nokia has issued a statement that contradicts what its Maemo team said publicly in London. There you go:

While it is our policy not to disclose details of our product roadmap, we'd like to explicitly communicate that we remain firmly committed to Symbian as our smartphone platform of choice. Any speculation on what our 2012 roadmap, including operating systems and product branding, are completely premature.

Opera Mobile 10 beta for Symbian S60 handsets

Opera has just announced that they will make Mobile 10 beta for Symbian S60 handsets available, where it will work perfectly fine on Symbian S60 3rd and 5th editions, which means your cellphone doesn't need to have a touchscreen display to get started. Touted to have double the speed of older versions for Symbian, you will also benefit from desktop-like features including Speed Dial and tabbed browsing. [Press Release]

Nokia Launches E52

The latest E series smartphone from Nokia would be the Nokia E52, where it is pretty much similar to the E55 in nature save for the missing QWERTY keypad, replaced by a standard alphanumeric keypad instead. Features of the E52 include a 2.4" QVGA display, HSDPA/HSUPA connectivity, GPS navigation, a 3.2-megapixel camera, Ovi service support, noise cancellation and a new email user interface that can be found on the Nokia E75 as well - guess this means you can consolidate up to 10 email accounts onto a single device, so make sure you have an unlimited data line to go along with this unless you want to be faced with a hefty phone bill at the end of the month. Nokia claims that the E52 is equipped with an “impressive battery life” that ought to last for up to 8 hours of non-stop yakking, but we're waiting for folks to test it and see how true this claim is. You can expect to pick up the Nokia E52 in either silver or brown colors from the second half of this year onwards for €245.

Nokia E71x Available From AT&T

At long last, the Nokia E71x is available from AT&T's website. Folks who are used to the iPhone OS or Windows Mobile might take some getting used to the Symbian S60 operating system, but for folks who are already using Nokia handsets, the E71x would be an excellent upgrade. Will you be making the jump even if you're using the E71 at the moment?
