Holiday shopping: our Uber10 suggestions and vote!
Posted on November 23, 2009 10:49 AM

The holiday shopping season is here and we've compiled an Uber10 list. A vote is open on the uber10 page to select an 11th gadget so help us choose!
The Uber10 Awards were unveiled at a cool Ubergizmo event in San Francisco last week (sponsored by Dolby and Intel, check the party photos). We hope that these suggestions will give you save time. On the financial side, there are a few ways to save: you can find the best deal and order online, or wait for Black Friday and hope that your favorite gadget goes on sale, which is unlikely if it's really cool, but who knows?
Now would be a good time to become a fan on Facebook. Happy shopping!

Posted on November 10, 2009 4:55 PM

Yes, it's that time of the year again (we can't believe it!). Soon, you will run around wondering what to get for your loved ones -probably at the last minute. We can help by suggesting the 10 greatest gifts (under $500) for this holiday season. They are called the “Uber10&rdquo. Please help us select an 11th gift by voting on an extended list (coming any day now).
The Uber10 will be unveiled in a private event in San Francisco on November 12, thanks to our Platinum Sponsor Dolby and Gold Sponsor Intel. Dolby will build a surround sound setup at the event venue to show us what the Dolby Surround Sound Experience is all about. You may be able to experience it for yourself, if the Dolby Truck stops by your town. Check out the cool Dolby videos on Youtube.
Intel will talk about the new Intel Sponsors of Tomorrow campaign and their hilarious "rock star" videos: "Intel Star" TV ad and Intel's "Big Ideas" TV ad
At the private event in San Francisco, both sponsors will demonstrate the coolest gadgets with their latest embedded technology.
Check out the 2007 and 2008 Uber10 lists, This 2009 edition will be published at ubergizmo.com/uber10
We have a few extra tickets for the private event, go to this discussion page on our Facebook Fan page to know how you can get one.
Editor's note: this seems obvious, but we would like to make it clear that companies with products nominated to the Uber10 cannot be accepted as sponsors of the Uber10 event.

| Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1. What to do when DSLR cameras can snap better photos and when smartphones are the "casual photography" device of choice? Go rugged! The Lumix DMC-TS1 fits in your pocket and can survive and thrive in environments that would make your iPhone's moisture sensor go nuts. ($287) | Barnes&Noble Nook. The Nook uses a touch-screen to power its user interface. You can browse books or use it as a virtual keyboard or whatever else developers will build: it runs on Android. But there's better: when you walk into a B&N store, you can browse all the books, for free. You can also lend books to friends. We would almost forget the "e" in "eBook". ($259) - Note: B&N has not managed to build enough of these, it's sold out... The kindle is the next best thing. | |

| Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX. Nomads never know what surface they might drop their mouse on next. It might be too shiny, or completely transparent: there are many hostile environments for computer mice. Rest assured that with the Anywhere Mouse MX, you won't have to use a magazine, or the hotel brochure, as a mouse pad and that's priceless. ($60) | Kodak Zi8 1080p. Unbelievably, the traditional camcorder industry has done very little progress to make things easier for users: odd video formats, conversions, huge files, poor industrial design... That's why pocket camcorders like the Kodak Zi8 are so popular. Isn't the best video the one that you can share? ($180) | |

| Apple iPod Touch 8GB. If you can't afford to give an iPhone to your kids, there's still hope for not ruining their social life. From what we can tell, teens are really happy to use the iPod Touch as a WIFI communication device and place their calls with Skype. Oh, and it plays music too ($199). | Zune HD 16GB. Is it better to pay $3000 or $15 per month to get 16GB of music? From the answer to this question, you'll know if the Zune HD is a good choice. The Zune HD is the king of music rental, and it might soon become a 3D gaming monster as well. The first game (PGR Ferrari Edition) is impressive on the OLED display ($215). | |

| Motorola Droid. The Droid is the best that Android has to offer for this holiday season. It's fast, has a display that is twice as sharp as the iPhone's, has a real keyboard and most importantly, it runs on a much better 3G network. In this case, the beauty is definitely on the inside ($200+subscription). | Sony PlayStation 3 Slim ($299). The PS3 Slim provides a great gaming experience with titles like "Modern Warfare 2" or exclusive titles like "Uncharted 2" or the upcoming "God of War 3", but it is also a formidable Blu-Ray Player that non-gamers can enjoy. Its best 2009 added feature: the price cut. | |

| HP Mini 110 Studio Tord Boontje. You might have noticed that computers in internet cafes look better than in other places. People are very aware that the coolness of their laptop rubs on them. The Tord Boontje design does look good and believe us, this photo does not do it justice ($399 start price, but the $500 version is beefier, if we dare using this adjective with a Netbook). | GlideTV. GlideTV is perfect gift for those who watch TV on a computer or connect a home-teather PC (HTPC) to a big screen in the living room. It looks great on the table and can control a 10-foot user interface from the comfort of the couch. When not in use, drop it in its cradle for a recharge ($150). | |

| Apple iPhone 3G 8GB . The iPhone is the only device that has made it onto this list two years in a row. It is not perfect but it is arguably the most desired phone out there, making it a great gift. We particularly like the new price and the GPS. $199 at AT&T. | BlackBerry Bold. The number one complaint about the iPhone is its lack of physical keyboard. That's what heavy texters and corporate email junkies really want. Search no further: the Blackberry bold has a lot going for it. It's good looking, has a formidable display and is fast - more reactive than an iPhone, we think. Free after rebate from Walmart. | |

| Lenovo S10 Netbook. Market studies have shown that Netbooks are taking over, driving the PC growth in recent quarters. If you needs are basic (web, email, simple apps) then it will work like a charm. Lenovo made the right technical decisions by offering more storage out of the box. It is also easy to hack. We suggest adding 2GB of RAM for $30. Ultra-portable will never be synonymous of ultra-expensive again. $399 at Lenovo. | Livescribe Pulse Smartpen. Taking notes is not the best way to conserve information. Recording audio retains everything, but is a pain in the neck to replay. The Pulse Smartpen solves this elegantly by allowing one to index audio using notes. It does a lot more stuff - check out the website. $149 at Livescribe. Mac version available as a software download on Nov 24th. | |

| Nikon Coolpix S710. The search for the perfect shot is not over, but the Coolpix S710 is a good stop on the way. It addresses two annoying things about compact cameras: it's good in low-light and it is fast to react. Did I say that the HD movie quality was impressive too? $379 at Nikon. | Nintendo DS Lite. When we say that the value is in the software, we mean it. The Nintendo DS game and application library has something for everyone. From arcade classics to educational to web browsing, there's something for everyone - that's why it is a great gift. DS Homepage, $130 at Target. | |

| Netflix Player by Roku. Anyone with a Netflix account can hook the Roku box to their TV and start streaming videos from the service - for free. It's an easy way to make a Netflix user happy. $99 at Roku. | Rovio Webcam Robot. Can we get more "gadgety" than this? The Rovio Webcam Robot is your eyes and your ears in your house or office. You control it remotely from a web-interface and once you're reassured, just click the "home" button and it will go back to its charging dock. $297 at Walmart. | |

| SanDisk Sansa Clip MP3 Player. The Sansa Clip is a great gym companion. You can slip it wherever is convenient, it has FM radio to tune in these TV channels while running and finally, it is compatible with music rental services. From $39.99. | Sony PlayStation 3 80GB. Everybody wants to play on the big living room TV. HDTV market penetration is going through the roof, that's why being a Blu-Ray player gives an edge to the PlayStation 3. Oh and did we mention exclusive games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo? Some game consoles were meant to be in the bedroom, the PS3 was built to dominate the living room. $399 at SonyStyle. | |

| Logitech VX nano. We've noticed that in many cafes, people have great laptops and crappy mice. This mouse is a great gift for your favorite cafe habitué. $50 | Harman Kardon Soundsticks II. They look so cool, you forget they're speakers. I decorate my office with them. $115 | |

| iPod nano 4GB. All iPods sound the same, but this one has the best bang for the buck. $140 | Seagate FreeAgent. A great-looking hard drive -- and 500GB is the sweet value spot. $180 | |

| GeForce 8800 GT. Upgrade your graphics card if you want smoother game play. Requires basic PC card replacement knowledge. $260 | Samsung SC-300X. This is a great camera for web videos. We use it at Ubergizmo! $290 | |

| CyberShot DSC-T200. The SLR camera is the one you want to keep for yourself, but the DSC T200 model is a perfect gift for your friends. $360 | iPhone 8GB. People can't get enough of them. The iPhone sets the bar higher for the whole industry. $400 (+$1000/yr) | |

Ubergizmo's 2008 People's Choice
Posted on May 9, 2009 12:58 PM
We have compiled a list of Top Gadgets that we think would make awesome gifts and there's one spot left... Help us decide which one of the gadget below will be the 2008 People's Choice!
Intel is a sponsor of the 2008 Uber10 private party in San Francisco. You can follow the Inside Scoop blog and get stories from real people inside the company, who are currently blogging about mobile computing and new Intel Core i7 processor hitting the market for the holidays.
The vote will close at 11:59pm (PT) on November 12th

JawBone 2: now that hands-free systems are a requirement in more and more states, this could be a cool gadget for pretty much anyone that drives with a Bluetooth phone in their pocket or purse.

Seagate FreeAgent Go 320GB: Laptops adoption is going through the roof and often, the preferred mean to backup the data is a good USB drive. There's always a good use for one of these, so why not offer the best looking one? (matches the Mac Aluminum color...)

Logitech Dinovo mini: PCs are so cheap that many people choose to have one in the living room, if you know one of them, know that this is the ultimate media center remote control because it has a unique feature: it looks great on the coffee table! (and yes, that seems really hard to pull off in this market...)

Sony PSP 3000: The latest evolution of the Sony PSP has a superior screen display and arguably offers the most powerful portable graphics engine of all. Aren't you tired of Brain Age?

Archos 605 WIFI: The Archos 605 is probably one of the best multimedia player out there. If you're serious about video quality, this PMP goes beyond the iPod Touch in display size, resolution or storage capacity. It can also browse the web, although we tend to think that people use mostly as media player.

Vudu: Ealier this year we have reviewed the Vudu and 6 months later, we still think that it is the absolute best movie rental box on the market. The quality of the videos and of the network is unmatched. I miss using it every other day. (hint, hint...)

HP mini 1000: Some make Netbooks really cheap, but HP makes them also really nice. This $399 computer is most likely the best looking netbook of all, isn't it?

Xbox 360: Microsoft has come a long way in game console design. While its lack of Blu-Ray prevents it from being called the king of the living room, its gaming abilities are top notch!
