windows-phone-81-cortana-07During the early part of April, Microsoft announced Windows Phone 8.1 in all of its official glory at the Microsoft BUILD 2014 conference. Now the question is when can we expect the update to begin rolling out? An exact release date is still in the air but according to Joe Belfiore, the developer preview is expected to see a release early April.

Well it turns out that today (the 14th of April) is apparently the day the developer preview will be released. This is according to Microsoft’s blog which apparently let the cat out of the bag a little earlier than expected because according to a post by Cliff Simpkins, he writes that the developer preview will be released today.

According to the post, “Starting today, you can update your personal dev phone(s) to run Windows Phone 8.1 using the Windows Phone Preview for Developers program.” The link to the post now takes you to a page that requires you to log-in, so chances are Microsoft spotted the post that went up a little ahead of time and decided to pull it until it was ready to go.

Assuming that the post was indeed referring to the 14th of April and that the developer preview will be released today, then this is definitely something worth looking forward to. This means that while end-users will still have to wait for the update to be pushed to their handsets, developers will be able to take the update for a spin and preview some of the upcoming features, so stay tuned for more updates.
