Smart locks aren’t exactly new technology. In fact we have seen in the past how hotels are starting to implement the technology where guests will no longer need to bother with a key card, but instead can rely on their smartphones to unlock their room doors. Well it looks like Sony wants in on the fun as well.

The company has recently launched a crowdfunding campaign for the Qrio Smart Lock. What makes this lock so different? Well according to Sony, it is apparently the smallest of its kind, so if you were after something small and minimalistic, perhaps this could be the smart lock for you. The Qrio Smart Lock will also allow users to share encrypted keys with their friends via platforms such as Line and Facebook.

That being said it looks like Sony has managed to achieve success with the Qrio Smart Lock. According to its crowdfunding page which is in Japanese, by the way, they have managed to raise more than what they had hoped for by 7%. With still some left time until the project officially comes to an end, there is a good chance that Sony could exceed their original funding even more.

Unfortunately it is not clear as to how those living outside of Japan will be able to get their hands on the Qrio when it officially enters production, but either way we’ll have to wait for the project to end and for the device to enter production before we talk about an international release, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled all the same.
