samsung-lgWith the launch of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, Sony effectively brought a 4K screen to the smartphone market. Granted it sort of “cheated” by not displaying 4K all the time, it was still pretty impressive nonetheless. We can only assume that it won’t be long before other OEMs adopt similar technology, or will they?

According to the latest reports out of Korea, it seems that at the very least neither Samsung nor LG will be announcing smartphones with 4K displays in 2016. This doesn’t mean that other brands won’t either, but if you’re a Samsung or LG fan it seems that you probably shouldn’t get your hopes up just yet.

The reason behind this? For starters it seems that the use of 4K displays can lead to phones overheating and also causes a drain on the battery, something that both Samsung and LG have apparently not solved yet. Secondly, there is also the issue of demand where neither manufacturer has seen enough orders from other OEMs that indicates that 4K is in high demand.

Of course this is just a rumor, but given that the Xperia Z5 Premium isn’t exactly flying off the shelves, we suppose there is some logic to the claims. Not to mention at a glance, it will be hard to tell the differences especially on such a small screen, but what say you? Is a smartphone with a 4K display something you are eager to own?
