If you find it a chore to manually enter your password every time you log out of your Windows 10 PC then Microsoft has just the thing for you. It appears that the company is testing a new version of its Authenticator app which will enable users to unlock their Windows 10 PCs over Bluetooth. The app has been listed as “Phone Sign-In Beta” and the description reads that it’s “the first step towards a world without passwords.”

Microsoft has been tinkering with multiple methods of identity verification in Windows 10. The Windows Hello feature allows the use of cameras and fingerprint sensors to verify the user’s identity but this app-based solution will prove to be even more simple.

Users will first need to perform a quick Bluetooth sync between their PC and this app. They will then be able to use the app to unlock their Windows 10 computer over Bluetooth, all they’ll need to do is launch the app and tap on their computer in the list to unlock it. Since this works over Bluetooth the computer needs to be nearby.

The app listing mentions that future versions of this app will bring support for a Microsoft account, sign-in solution for VPN and browsers, MFA approval through notifications as well as one-time passcode generation.

It’s unclear when Microsoft intends on releasing this app for Windows 10 users, and whether or not it will be made available for iOS and Android as well.
