facebook logoAds can be intrusive and sometimes ugly when not implemented properly, or when they’re completely irrelevant. We’re sure we’ve all seen those “work from home” ads, and how someone from your country made X amount of money, “click here to find out how”. We get it, there are ads that seem spammy which is where tools like ad blockers come into play.

The bad news is that it looks like Facebook has figured out a way to prevent ad blockers from working on its website. In an announcement by Facebook, the company announced a new way of displaying ads that can seemingly circumvent ad blockers. This means that regardless of whether you have an ad blocker in place, you will see these ads.

According to Facebook, “We’ve designed our ad formats, ad performance and controls to address the underlying reasons people have turned to ad blocking software. When we asked people about why they used ad blocking software, the primary reason we heard was to stop annoying, disruptive ads. As we offer people more powerful controls, we’ll also begin showing ads on Facebook desktop for people who currently use ad blocking software.”

However this isn’t about Facebook sticking it to ad blockers. Instead the company calls it “ad controls” which they claim gives users more control over what ads they want and don’t want to see. “We believe that these expanded controls give people a better experience with advertising on and off Facebook. We also know there’s more work to do, and we’re continually listening to your feedback to make advertising better for everyone.”
