Nintendo’s fierce protectiveness of their IP is probably one of the reasons why we haven’t really seen many animated TV shows or movies that are based around Nintendo franchises. We guess the closest we’ve gotten would be the Pokemon anime series and movies, although to be fair Pokemon isn’t 100% owned by Nintendo.

However the good news is that it seems that an animated series is being developed by Nickelodeon, or at least that’s the speculation at the moment. This is based on a recent podcast uploaded onto Nickelodeon’s YouTube channel in which Fred Seibert of Frederation Studios seemed allude to that.

According to the Seibert, “We have a project now that we’re doing that needs to go unnamed, based on one of the most world famous video games of the last 30 years, that we’ve had in our shop for twelve years without being able to get it started. But there were great characters and a great story, and eventually we got it going.”

Now there are many classic video games that date back 30 years or so, so in reality Seibert could be talking about just about any title. However given that Nintendo seems to be more open to the idea of branching out from their usual mediums, such as by launching a Mario game for mobile devices, who knows, maybe the idea of an animated Mario TV series isn’t that much of a stretch.
