Before smartphones, most people would rely on their computers to go on the internet, and with Windows commanding pretty much the majority of the operating system market, it was also easy to why they also dominated the market in terms of internet usage. However that appears to be changing.

In a report from StatCounter (via 9to5Google), it has been revealed that Google’s Android operating system is catching up to Windows, and at the rate this is going we wouldn’t be surprised if Android eventually overtook Windows in terms of internet usage in the next year or so.

According to Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter, “The idea of Android almost matching Windows would have been unthinkable five years ago. In January 2012 Windows held 82% global internet usage share compared to just 2.2% for Android.” Now this doesn’t mean that Windows is losing its OS market share to Android, but rather with the rise of smartphones and how it allows us to go online wherever we are without the need for WiFi, it is clear that phones are becoming the default choice for many when surfing online.

This is also why many companies are starting to focus more on their mobile offerings and catering their websites to mobile users, but what do you guys make of these stats? Do you think Android will eventually overtake Windows in internet usage?
