So far from what we can tell from the various teardowns over the years, Apple has largely relied on Imagination Technologies PowerVR GPU for the iPhone’s graphics. We’re not sure if this will change in recent times, but assuming that it is not, the company has recently announced its new GPU architecture that could pave the way for future iPhones to support 4K graphics.

Dubbed PowerVR Furian, this is the company’s latest GPU architecture that Imagination is claiming will offer up 70-90% improvement in terms of real-world gaming performance. It will include 35% better shader performance, 80% better fill rate, and it is also expected to be more energy efficient which means that whichever device uses it should be able to squeeze out more battery life than before.

According to Imagination, “We created Furian to address a new class of emerging applications, with a focus on efficient scalability that will extend to multiple generations of PowerVR IP cores. We’re excited to start rolling out the first 8XT IP cores based on Furian. These cores will further cement the leadership of PowerVR at the high end of mobile performance.”

As MacRumors points out, Apple has been a licensee and stakeholder in Imagination Technologies since at least 2008, which means that the company has relied on their technology for close to 10 years. Like we said we’re not sure if Apple plans to shift away from their technology, but for now it doesn’t seem like the case.
