The Apple Watch bands of the future may not require you to do much in order to get the perfect fit. It turns out that Apple has patented several types of self-adjusting bands for the Apple Watch. The bands will basically have the ability to loosen or tighten based on the user’s wrist to provide them with a perfect fit.
The patent, titled “Dynamic fit adjustment for wearable electronic devices,” details how these bands would be able to adjust electronically in order to tighten or loosen up either manually or in response to biometric data from the Apple Watch.
It goes without saying that these bands will be significantly more complex than the existing bands that are made out of just leather or rubber. The patent details that this functionality could be enabled by a shape memory wire that expands and contracts with electric signals or with fluid or gas filled bladders.
It may also be possible with lugs that retract into the Watch’s body or with an extendable case that moves the Apple Watch closer to the user’s arm.
Since this is only a patent at this point in time, it’s too soon to be certain what sort of an implementation Apple will go for, that is if it ever decides to come out with self-adjusting watch bands in the first place. It would be pretty cool if it did, though.
