A team of CERN and MIT scientists got together a couple of years back to create a secure and encrypted email service called ProtonMail. They rolled out a VPN service last year following the rollback of the internet privacy rules that the Obama administration had enacted. The ProtonVPN service was first released in beta for desktop users in March 2017 before it was rolled out to the public in June. It has now finally been released for Android users.

There was quite a high demand for the ProtonVPN service, the free tier, which is why the company had to put up a waiting list so that it could control the flow of users. The service was properly opened up to all users in September last year.

ProtonVPN offers multiple tiers ranging from free to $24 per month. The free tier has a single-device limitation and only provides server access in three countries. The $24 per month tier provides VPN access on up to 10 devices and servers in all available countries.

The service itself is built on the open source OpenVPN standard and is compatible with other VPN clients that support OpenVPN. Users could technically get ProtonVPN on their mobile devices by using a third-party OpenVPN app but a dedicated app is a much better way of mainstreaming the ProtonVPN service for Android. The app is available as a free download from the Google Play Store.
