When it comes to supercars, the vast majority of them still run on gas. Perhaps this is done to cater to motoring purists who believe that gas-powered cars will always perform better than those running on electricity. However it seems that Ferrari has recently confirmed that they will be building an electric supercar that could potentially cater to those who want a fast and eco-friendly car.

This was confirmed by the company’s Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne who was quoted as saying, “If there is an electric supercar to be built, then Ferrari will be the first. People are amazed at what Tesla did with a supercar: I’m not trying to minimize what Elon did but I think it’s doable by all of us.”

Interestingly enough Marchionne’s statement seems to represent a change of heart of the company, where Ferrari’s previous president had about 7 years ago vow that they would never build an electric vehicle. However times have clearly changed from then and now, especially with Tesla gaining more traction with its fast and futuristic cars that are packed with features.

We’re also starting to see more carmakers start shifting their production towards more hybrids and electric vehicles, so for Ferrari to come around and announce their own EV doesn’t really come as a surprise. Whether or not this decision will sit well with fans of the brand remains to be seen, but we guess we’ll have to see the performance of said vehicle to find out.
