It has only been a few months since Huawei introduced its Kirin 970 processor which arrived with the P20 series. It appears that the company now has another new high-end chip up its sleeve for the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 series. In a press release sent to the South African media, Huawei has confirmed that the Huawei Mate 20 processor will indeed be the Kirin 980.
More and more details are gradually being revealed about the Huawei Mate 20, the second top-of-the-line series to launch this year from Huawei. It’s unclear as yet, though, when this series is going to be officially announced.
According to a report, the press release sent to South African media mentions that the “Kirin 980 will power the Mate 20 series.” The new chip is expected to feature an octa-core processor with four A76 cores and four A55 cores. The larger cores may be clocked at 2.8 GHz.
Previous reports have suggested that the Kirin 980 chip will be based on TSMC’s 7nm manufacturing process which will deliver improvements in speed and power efficiency. It may even have a new AI processor which will lead to improvement in on-device artificial intelligence processing.
Huawei hasn’t said when it’s going to launch the Mate 20 series but October is now said to be the month when the company will officially unveil this series.
