One of the main reasons why gaming headsets differ from regular headphones is that while headphones tend to focus primarily on sound quality, gaming headsets tend to focus on features like microphones that can transmit audio clearly, and also drivers that can help deliver spatial audio, meaning that gamers can pinpoint where their enemies are when they are closeby.

If you’re a serious Fortnite gamer, then you might be interested to learn that Epic has announced that they will be adding more audio cues to the game. According to Epic, “Heya folks. We’ve heard your feedback on Audio and have some updates! Tactical audio cues are incredibly important to the core gameplay, and our goal is for you to be able to consistently rely on audio information to survive.”

This will include changes to footstep sounds such as adding more contrast between above and below steps. According to Epic, “More high frequency audio content to improve your ability to pinpoint the location of steps, and to prevent them from getting drowned out during intense combat.”

They are also adding glider audio that helps to increase awareness to help players know when an enemy is gliding towards them, such as doppler-based glider audio that creates an effect to let players know when another player glides over them. Note that these features are still being developed and tested internally, so don’t expect to see them in the game anytime soon.
