Sony had blocked crossplay and progression for Fortnite on the PlayStation 4 when the popular battle royale title arrived on the console. This was obviously not appreciated by Fortnite fans who play the game on multiple consoles. This meant that they couldn’t access their progression, skins, and purchases made on the PS4 on another console like the Xbox One or Nintendo Switch. Sony is finally enabled PS4 Fortnite cross-play.

Sony initially remained adamant about not allowing cross-play even though it took a lot of criticism from fans and the industry alike for not allowing cross-play. The message was that the PlayStation 4 was the best platform for the best Fortnite experience.

The company has finally reversed its decision. Sony’s PlayStation chief John Kodera has announced that a solution for this issue has been found. “The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems,” he confirmed.

Sony took a lot of criticism for blocking cross-play for Fortnite. It has made the same decision for Rocket League and Minecraft even though both Nintendo and Microsoft allowed it. The companies actually worked together to promote Minecraft cross-play on their consoles.

The beta is open today to test PS4 Fortnite crossplay while Sony will continuing working to fully support this for the title. This also opens the door to the possibility that Sony could also allow cross-play for other games in the future.
