A criminal ring has been targeting Apple Stores which has led to more than $1 million in Apple devices being stolen. The company is now responding to this security issue by contracting police to stand guard outside its retail stores in Sacramento and Roseville. The criminal ring has hit Apple Stores across 19 counties in California so far and 17 suspects have so far been charged.

CBS Sacramento reports that Apple has privately contracted Sacramento police officers. This means that no taxpayer money is being used to fund the officers’ extra shifts. Apple will foot the bill in exchange for the greater protection that police officers can provide compared to mall security. The officers can actually pursue thieves outside mall property.

This isn’t the first time that Apple is privately contracting police to help with security duties for its stores. The company already had police posted outsides its Marina and Union Square stores in San Francisco. Police in SF believes that this is a major reason why these stores have not been hit by the criminal ring.

It’s possible that Apple may contract additional police officers to be posted outside some of its other California stores that have been hit by robbers as well. The robberies have been quick jobs with thieves running in and grabbing as many products as they can before taking off.
