The new Intel 9th generation processors have been officially unveiled today. Even though the company is calling them 9th generation chips, they are actually based on the company’s existing 14nm process technology. It has been used by the company going as far back as the 5th generation chips that were released back in 2014. The particular process technology being used for this generation is called 14nm++ and Intel introduced it last year.
The company’s true next-generation will be the 10nm Cannon Lake chips. It has delayed their production to 2019 so they won’t be out until next year. These chips are going to fill the gap in the interim.
The 9th Gen Core i5-9600K has six cores and as many threads with a base 3.7 GHz speed that can be boosted up to 4.6 GHz. The Core i7-9700K has eight cores and threats with a 3.6GHz base speed that can be boosted to 4.9GHz.
Intel’s flagship chip is the new Core i9-9900K. The company said during its event today that it’s the “best gaming processor in the world. Period.” It has eight cores and 16 threads, 3.6GHz base clock with up to 5.0GHz boost.
The company has started taking pre-orders for the new chips today and will be shipping them on October 19th. The Core i9, i7, and i5 models will cost $488, $373, and $262 respectively.
