There’s no questioning Samsung’s dominance in the mobile OLED space. The sheer scale at which it produces and supplies OLED displays to its own smartphone subsidiary and other manufacturers is unmatched. However, Sharp is now entering the arena with the AQUOS Zero. The company’s latest device will come with its own OLED display and Sharp also has plans to supply panels to other OEMs.
Sharp has announced today that it will be offering OLED displays in its smartphones this year with the AQUOS Zero being the first device to ship with its own panel. The company will also be selling OLED panels to other manufacturers.
The company already supplies LCD panels to a variety of customers, including Apple. It was only a matter of time before it entered the OLED arena as well given that it’s the display technology of choice for premium handsets now.
It has been a costly endeavor for the Foxconn-owned company. It has invested over $500 million to produce OLED panels and is yet to ink any supply deals with major manufacturers. The AQUOS Zero will thus be the very first smartphone with a Sharp OLED panel measuring 6.2 inches with 2992×1440 pixel resolution.
The device also features a Snapdragon 845 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It will be available for purchase in Japan initially.
