Over the years WhatsApp has grown in terms of features and functionality. The app initially started as an app that would let users send messages to each other, but in recent years users have also been able to make voice and video calls. Unfortunately it seems that the video call feature had a bug that might have been missed by the company.However the good news is that this issue has since been fixed. The bug was initially discovered by Natalie Silvanovich, a security researcher with Google’s Project Zero security research team, where she claimed that if it had been exploited, users receiving a video call could result in hackers taking advantage and taking over the app. This affected both iOS and Android versions of the app.
WhatsApp has since patched the bug in late September and also issued a statement to ZDNet saying, “WhatsApp cares deeply about the security of our users. We routinely engage with security researchers from around the world to ensure WhatsApp remains safe and reliable. We promptly issued a fix to the latest version of WhatsApp to resolve this issue.”
While the bug sounds quite scary, it appears that the company has found no signs or evidence that any attacks that exploited this bug was carried out, so for the most part users can rest assured.
