Virtual reality (VR) is expected to be one of the futures of entertainment. Google themselves have been dabbling in the technology and to showcase how VR can be enjoyed, Google Spotlight Stories has since released a new film for VR called “Age of Sail”. The short is directed by Academy Award winner John Kahrs who also behind the popular Disney Paperman short.

According to the description of the film, “Set on the open ocean in 1900, Age of Sail is the story of William Avery (voiced by Ian McShane), an old sailor adrift and alone in the North Atlantic. When Avery reluctantly rescues Lara, who has mysteriously fallen overboard, he finds redemption and hope in his darkest hours.”

The film is available for free via the Google Spotlight Stories app on both iOS and Android. It is also available on the Viveport and Steam for those who prefer watching on the PC. Also if you don’t have a VR headset ready, not to worry because Google has also released a theatrical version (see video above) that you can watch normally and just enjoy the overall story, although we imagine that watching it in VR will probably help make it feel more immersive.

If you have about 12 minutes or so to spare, and have a simple VR device like the Google Cardboard, perhaps this could be worth checking out.
