Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix 3 handset a couple of months ago and the one that’s available right now doesn’t have 5G support. However, with 5G networks due to go live in a few months, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has confirmed that it will be releasing a 5G variant of the Mi Mix 3. This variant will be powered by the recently announced Snapdragon 855 mobile platform from Qualcomm.

Xiaomi made the announcement at China Mobile’s annual partner conference in Beijing this week. It also had demo units of the Mi Mix 3 with Snapdragon 855 and Qualcomm’s X50 5G modem.

The company mentions that the device will couple the technology from Qualcomm with Xiaomi’s in-house antenna switching tech to hit download speeds of 2 Gbps. The demo unit it had set up at the conference was able to connect to a 5G network, browse the internet, and stream videos.

Not much else will be changed aside from the chipset and the modem. It will otherwise be the same Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 that’s already out with its impressive screen to body ratio, slider mechanism for the front camera, and rear mounted fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi hasn’t said what this device is going to cost when it does arrive. The company aims to launch it in the first quarter of next year.
