The call screening feature that Google unveiled at its Pixel 3 event a couple of months ago is finally trickling down for the first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL. The company had said that all Pixel handsets would get this feature and it did arrive for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL last month. Owners of the original Google smartphones will now be able to take advantage of this feature as well.

The Call Screen feature has Google Assistant answering incoming calls. It lets Pixel users see who’s calling them and what they want before they decide whether or not they want to answer the call themselves.

When Pixel users receive a call, a “Screen call” button appears alongside the usual call controls. If they tap this button, Google Assistant will inform the caller that their call is being screened and ask them to state the reason. That is then transcribed on the screen with users being given the option to either mark the call as spam or tell the caller that they will get back to them later.

Users on the r/GooglePixel sub-reddit are now reporting that the feature is rolling out for the original Pixel and Pixel XL handsets. It’s unclear if this is linked to the latest Phone app update that’s available but that may very well be the case since it mentions “Introducing Call Screen for Pixel” in the changelog.
