Walgreens today announced that its customers will be able to get next-day delivery for their prescriptions. It has teamed up with FedEx to offer this service. Walgreens may be looking to make changes before Amazon’s acquisition of online pharmacy PillPack closes. The retail giant bought PillPack earlier this year in June.

Amazon’s acquisition of PillPack is yet to close which gives Walgreens some space to push new initiatives before the behemoth takes control of the online pharmacy.

Walgreens already offers customers in some markets same-day delivery which will be expanded next year. This partnership with FedEx enables it to offer nationwide next-day delivery for prescriptions. “Next-day prescription home delivery is another convenience-driver,” said Richard Ashworth, president of operations for Walgreens.

The service is part of Walgreens Express. It already has an existing relationship with FedEx. Customers can pick up and drop off packages at over 8,000 Walgreens pharmacies nationwide.

Walgreens Express enables customers to preview the cost of their prescriptions and prepay for those that are eligible. If they want to spend an additional $4.99, they can have their qualifying prescription delivered as early as the next day or can choose to pick it up at a store where they will be able to check out in a special express lane.
