There’s a major Android TV update rolling out today for recent Sony smart TVs. The company may have a good track record with rolling out updates for its smartphones but it doesn’t show quite the same haste for its smart TVs. So even though Android 9 Pie is now being rolled out, Sony has just got around to releasing Android Oreo for its TVs.
The company is rolling out Android TV 8.0 to 24 smart TVs that were released from 2016 through 2018. Supported models include the likes of the XBR-100Z9D, XBR-43X800E through to the XBR-77A1E.
The major platform update brings significant new features for Sony smart TVs in addition to quite a few bug fixes. The changelog mentions that this update fixes picture quality issues viewing Dolby Vision content on Netflix, resolves a DTV 1080i flashing problem, and more. It also improves performance for Amazon Prime video playback.
The Android TV 8.0 update for these TVs improves the Home screen menu for greater usability, the keyboard design, and the Search function using Google Assistant. There’s support for Picture-in-Picture while using an app so users can now continue to watch TV in a small window while they use an Android TV app.
Sony has started rolling out the update over-the-air today so it may take some time before it goes live for all users.
