We know that Verizon is exploring ways to take advantage of 5G. Given how fast the promised speeds are supposed to be, it does seem like it holds a lot of potential. However could one of the potential uses of 5G be for game streaming? While we can’t say for sure, it seems that Verizon could be exploring the idea.

According to a report from The Verge, it seems that the carrier is testing out its own game streaming platform dubbed “Verizon Gaming” which apparently is working on the NVIDIA SHIELD set-top box, with plans to eventually expand to smartphones. The carrier has yet to officially announce anything or acknowledge the existence of the service, but the report claims that Verizon has been quietly recruiting players to take part in the tests.

Based on the screenshots obtained by The Verge, it seems that there will be quite a number of games that will be available to gamers to choose from. This includes Fortnite, God of War, Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Far Cry, and so on. However it has been pointed out that some of these games are exclusive to other platforms, which suggest that maybe these are just placeholders for now.

The report also points out how there is evidence that Verizon is indeed working on such a service due to various job listings that specifically talk about cloud gaming. When this service will launch remains to be seen, but with the fast speeds that 5G promises, we wouldn’t be surprised if this was one of the ways Verizon could be looking to leverage the technology.
