It has been a few years since Apple officially discontinued its Thunderbolt displays. LG has since taken over where the company has been producing UltraFine monitors designed for Apple’s computers. However, it seems that Apple could be considering getting back into the display game.

This is according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo whose recent research note claims that Apple could actually have a new display in the works. According to the analyst, Apple could be working on a 31.6-inch 6K display with a mini LED-like backlight design that could see a release in 2019. Currently, the biggest display that Apple offers would be the 27-inch iMac or the 27-inch LG UltraFine, both of which offer a 5K display, so this new display would definitely be taking things up a notch.

Kuo’s report shouldn’t come as a surprise for those who have followed Apple news over the years. This is because Apple exec Phil Schiller had previously stated that the company is working on a “pro display”. This was in response to customers wondering about Apple’s plans for a new Mac Pro.

Schiller was quoted as saying, “As part of doing a new Mac Pro — it is, by definition, a modular system — we will be doing a pro display as well. Now you won’t see any of those products this year; we’re in the process of that. We think it’s really important to create something great for our pro customers who want a Mac Pro modular system, and that’ll take longer than this year to do.” Of course whether or not this “pro” display will be the 31.6-inch 6K mini LED display that Kuo is claiming remains to be seen, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
