Last year at SDC 2018, Samsung sort of took the wraps off their foldable smartphone. In reality, it was more of a sneak peek where the company showcased its foldable screen technology. However, during Samsung’s Galaxy S10 Unpacked event, the company has since officially announced the handset in full in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
It’s not the most creative name we’ve heard but it does a good job of getting the point across. The handset will feature a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex display that will allow users to transform the phone into a tablet-like device, and back again. When the device is folded, the cover display will sport a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED screen which makes it smaller than the majority of smartphones out there today, even budget ones.
That being said, we can understand why Samsung has opted for a smaller screen as using a larger display could potentially hike up the cost of the phone. Other specs include an octa-core processor built using the 7nm process, 12GB of RAM, a triple camera setup on the back, a dual front-facing camera (when unfolded), and the cover camera is a 10Mp shooter.
The phone will also come with a 4,380mAh battery, although we have to wonder given how many displays the phone is powering if it will be enough. As for pricing and availability, the Samsung Galaxy Fold will be launched in the US on AT&T and T-Mobile in Q2 2019 where it will be priced starting at $1,980.
