Quite a few companies will be unveiling new 5G smartphones at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona next week. You can now add China-based ZTE to the list. Most recently in the news for its troubles with the U.S. government, the company has confirmed that it will be launching an Axon-branded 5G smartphone at MWC 2019.

ZTE has posted a teaser image on Weibo confirming that it will be unveiling a 5G smartphone at the upcoming trade show in Barcelona. The teaser suggests that this device will be released under its Axon-branding for smartphones.

The company isn’t new to the 5G race. It has been working on 5G devices, both smartphones and networking products, for a few years now. It did showcase a prototype of a 5G phone at MWC last year and it seems that this year, ZTE will bring a device that’s going to be commercially available down the line.

No further details are available about this new smartphone right now. It may very well be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 platform as you’d expect this to be a flagship smartphone. It would thus use Qualcomm’s X50 5G NR modem for hopping on to the next-generation network. We’ll have to wait until MWC 2019 kicks off on February 25th to find out more about this device.
