For the most part, many of us live in countries where the internet is fast and fairly reliable. This means that websites load in a timely manner, videos can stream with no interruptions, and files can download quickly. However, there are some who don’t enjoy these fast and reliable internet speeds, which means that website optimization is very important.

This is where Google’s Chrome Data Saver extension came in handy, where it helped improve on page loading times. Unfortunately, it looks like Google has decided to kill off the feature. Google has announced that the extension will be deprecated in the near future and will instead be relaunched on Chrome for Android where it will now be known as Lite mode.

According to Google, “Lite mode also helps improve page loads. If Chrome predicts that a page will take longer than 5 seconds for the first text or image to show on screen, it will load a Lite version of the page instead. Lite pages are highly optimized to load considerably faster.” The company does not mention why it is killing off the desktop extension, but presumably, they’d rather invest their resources into the mobile version instead.

That isn’t too surprising when you see how some developers have chosen to launch “Lite” versions of its apps for developing markets. Google is one of them where they had previously launched YouTube Go which was designed for lower-end handsets.
