The ongoing Star Wars trilogy will come to an end with the release of The Rise of Skywalker later this year. Disney has already confirmed that there’s going to be a new trilogy which will begin in 2022. The company’s CEO also confirmed today that the next movie will come from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, best known for being the showrunners of Game of Thrones, one of the most popular TV series in the history of television.

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed during the company’s annual Upfronts event that the Game of Thrones showrunners will be at the helm of the next Star Wars movie, part of the new trilogy which is due to begin from 2022.

Iger says that it makes sense to take a hiatus after the release of The Rise of Skywalker this year. “Three years is the proper amount of time to take a breather and reset but really gear up for the next film’s release. We did a deal with Benioff and Weiss, and the next movie will be theirs,” he said.

The next trilogy will see three new Star Wars films being released in 2022, 2024, and 2026. There’s obviously no information right now about the plot lines and the cast. It’s going to be a long time before we get to hear about any of that.
