Just like Samsung and Apple, Huawei makes its own chipsets. These Kirin chipsets can be found in quite a few Huawei handsets, although the company uses Qualcomm’s chipsets from time to time as well. However, moving forwards, the company is expected to use more of its Kirin chipsets in future devices.

This is according to a report from hardware suppliers to Huawei who are alleging that Huawei is looking to reduce their reliance on other chipset makers, such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. To give you some context, it has been estimated that in the second half of 2018, less than 40% of Huawei’s phones used the company’s own Kirin chipset.

However, that number rose to about 45% in the first half of 2019, but they are expected to boost production where about 60% of Huawei’s phones will be powered by the Kirin chipset in the second half of 2019. This is not a surprising move when you consider that Huawei has narrowly escaped its US ban.

During the ban, the company would have been prevented from doing business with US companies such as Qualcomm. By transitioning more of its devices to its own Kirin chipsets, this means that should the company ever find themselves in another similar position in the future, they will be better prepared.
