With a great many phones due to be launched in the second half of this year, Qualcomm today announced the Snapdragon 855 Plus. It’s essentially an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform that’s already found in devices like the Galaxy S10. It has the same overall design and chip layout but with higher peak clock speeds.

Qualcomm says that the eight core Kryo CPU in the Snapdragon 855 Plus is clocked at up to 2.96GHz which is a slight boost compared to the Snapdragon 855’s 2.84GHz. It also claims that there’s a 15 percent performance improvement from the Adreno 640 graphics processor. We’ll most likely be seeing this mobile platform in the next wave of gaming smartphones from the likes of Razer and other companies.

The company also talks about the improved artificial intelligence and virtual reality functionality of its updated mobile platform, highlighting that its fourth generation AI Engine is capable of more than 7 trillion operations per second.”

Qualcomm also promises “best-in-class” cellular performance in 5G devices, a few of which are indeed going to be released in the coming months. It retains both the Snapdragon X24 LTE 4G and X50 5G modem. The company says that we should expect to see the Snapdragon 855 Plus in new devices in the second half of this year.
