For a while now we’ve been hearing rumors that Apple could be working on an augmented reality headset. Now in a tweet by 9to5Mac’s Guilherme Rambo, it seems that there has been evidence discovered in iOS 13 that makes reference made to Apple’s AR headset. This is further confirmed by developer Steve Troughton-Smith who found a “read me” file that talks about stereo AR apps that can be “worn”.

There are also references made that suggests that any AR rendering that needs to be done could be done on the iPhone itself. This means that we could be looking at a device where the glasses are simply a holder for the iPhone, kind of like how devices like the Samsung’s Gear VR or Google Cardboard.

This is actually not the first time that code within iOS has hinted at an AR headset. We have heard rumors that Apple could be planning to launch it as early as 2020, but whether or not that happens remains to be seen. Apple will not be the first company to attempt an AR headset, although whether or not they’ll succeed where others have failed will be interesting to watch.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had also in the past suggested that Apple will not be shipping an AR product until they believe it will deliver a great experience. So far, AR glasses like the Google Glass have shown a lot of promise on paper, but in real-life it didn’t quite work out, although it did find a new lease on life amongst industrial workers.
