Ahead of Apple’s iPhone event, it was rumored that the company could be getting ready to launch a Tile-like tracking accessory of their own. It was also rumored that the tracker could take advantage of ultra-wideband technology which would make it easier to find and also more accurate when it comes to pinging its location.
However, during the event, Apple failed to mention anything about the tracker, but it seems that there could still be signs of it being alive. This is because it has been noted that Apple’s iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max come with a new chipset called the “U1”. Apple did not dive into too much details, but this chipset will utilize ultra-wideband technology.
Apple does not mention anything about tracking, but they do note that it could be used for faster and better AirDropping of files. According to Apple, “Think GPS at the scale of your living room. So if you want to share a file with someone using AirDrop, just point your iPhone at theirs and they’ll be first on the list.”
We’re not sure why the company did not mention anything about the tag, but the appearance of the U1 chip does give us hope that the accessory is still alive and well. Apple could potentially hold another event in the coming months for its new iPad refreshes, so maybe we’ll learn more about it then.
