Thieves Who Stole $300,000 Worth Of iPhones Might Have Just Wasted Their Time

iPhones are a hot commodity and just about everyone wants one. Their resale value is also pretty high for second-hand devices, which is why many thieves and robbers are targeting the devices. In fact, a report from Perth Now has revealed that a group of thieves had smashed their way into an Apple Store in Perth, Australia, where they made off with more than $300,000 worth of iPhones.

While it seems like the thieves might have just landed themselves a huge payday, they actually haven’t. This is because Apple has security measures put into place for such instances like theft, where given that Apple now knows which devices have been stolen, the company has locked them and have rendered them useless. This means that the thieves are now sitting on a bunch of bricks, although we guess the parts can still be sold, although it probably won’t net as much as selling the phone itself.

Det Snr Const Whelan has also cautioned the public to avoid buying these stolen phones, especially if the deal seems to be too good to be true. “You also have to ask yourself, do you want to waste your hard earned money on something that is as useful as a house brick? By buying this black-market product, you’re ultimately causing these burglaries to occur, because you are generating a market, this black market where people can buy technology cheap. So that makes this group of people want to do this again.”
