One of the ways that developers earn money through their games these days, beyond the initial purchase, is by selling in-game items. A popular in-game item comes in the form of loot boxes, where the randomized nature of these loot boxes means that gamers will need to keep buying them to try their luck at getting the item they want.

It was rumored that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare could come with a loot box system (or supply drops, as it is known in the game), but in a post by Infinity Ward on Reddit, the developer has clarified that they do not have plans to include loot boxes in the game, and that all functional items can be earned through gameplay.

According to the post, it reads, “Sigh. There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare. What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system. Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY. Stay tuned, we’re planning to release info this week.”

However, as some comments have pointed out, what the developers say now and what they do later are different things. This means that it is possible that for now, there might not be plans for loot boxes, but it does not mean that they won’t be adding it later. Whether or not they will remains to be seen, but given the controversial nature of loot boxes, it’s not surprising that they want to stay away from the mechanic for now.
