Earlier this year, Instagram decided to kill off its Direct messaging app. In case you didn’t know, Direct was a standalone app designed for users to message each other through the platform. However, following the discontinuation of the app, we heard reports that Instagram had a new messaging app in the works called Threads.

For those wondering about the app, wonder no more because Instagram has since launched Threads. So what’s the difference between Direct and Threads? Basically privacy seems to be the main focus. Where Direct allowed anyone to send you messages, Threads will give users more control over who they chat with.

According to Instagram, “Threads is a standalone app designed with privacy, speed, and your close connections in mind. You can share photos, videos, messages, Stories, and more with your Instagram close friends list. You are in control of who can reach you on Threads, and you can customize the experience around the people who matter most.”

Users will also be able to take photos and videos and share them with each other, and there will also be features like Status updates. This allows users to update their status to show what they’re doing, so you can keep your friends updated without having to chat with them. In a way, some of these features aren’t exactly new and have existed in previous messaging apps before. In any case, if you’re interested in the app, keep an eye out for it as Instagram announced that its availability has started rolling out starting today.
