Over the past few years, Blizzard has introduced remasters of several of its games. This came in the form of a remaster of the original StarCraft and back in 2018, Blizzard announced Warcraft 3: Reforged which is also basically a remaster of the game. We have also heard the rumors that a Diablo 2 remaster could be in the works as well, but maybe not.

During an interview at ExileCon 2019, Diablo’s original creators Max and Erich Schaefer revealed that they do not think that a Diablo 2 remaster could be in development. According to Erich, he claims that this is because the hard drives containing the backup of the game’s source code and assets were lost, which meant that remastering Diablo 2 would be difficult for Blizzard to pull off.

“We lost a lot of the assets, art assets. It would make it very difficult for Blizzard to do a Diablo 2 Remaster because all the assets we used are pretty much gone. They’d have to make them from scratch.” That being said, we should point out that both the Schaefers no longer work at Blizzard and as such, probably aren’t privy to what the company is doing.

However, with Diablo 4 having been announced, we imagine that the company will probably be focusing their time and resources on that instead of remastering an old game.
