Smart home devices are fantastic inventions. They let us remotely control our lights, doors, home appliances, and more. It can also be automated which could also potentially be great for energy savings. However, the problem with smart home devices is that because they’re connected to the internet, it means that they are also susceptible to hacks.
Unfortunately for Amazon, it seems that the company is facing a lawsuit over its Ring cameras where according to Alabama resident, John Orange, it seems that these devices are susceptible to hacks and Amazon’s failure to do enough to make sure their devices are secure is what led to the lawsuit.
According to Orange, he claims that his Ring outdoor camera was hacked where a stranger managed to access the speakers on the camera and spoke to his kids through it. Ring had previously responded to Orange’s complaints, claiming that there was no evidence that its infrastructure had been compromised.
They also suggested that it could also be that some users reused logins that might have been breached in the past, which Orange felt was unacceptable as they were essentially blaming customers. The lawsuit accuses the company of being in breach of contract, invasion of privacy, negligence, unjust enrichment, and violating California’s Unfair Competition Law. The company has declined to comment on the lawsuit.
