It’s hard to imagine what the world will look like in the future, but that isn’t going to stop Toyota from trying. At CES 2020, the company has announced their plans to build what they are calling a prototype city of the future, which will be located at the base of the very iconic Mt. Fuji in Japan.

Dubbed the “Woven City”, this will be a city powered by hydrogen fuel cells. It is also expected to house a lot of futuristic and connected tech, such as autonomy, robotics, personal mobility, smart homes, and AI, all integrated into an actual living environment. The city will also have roads for multiple modes of transportation.

This includes a lane for faster vehicles, a lane for lower speed and personal mobility vehicles, and pedestrians. The city will also have a focus on sustainability where it will rely on wood to minimize the carbon footprint, and will also rely on traditional Japanese wood joinery. Rooftops will also be covered with solar panels to provide energy in addition to what is already being produced by the hydrogen fuel cells.

It will be interesting to see what this city of the future will look like, and it seems that we might not have to wait too long. Groundbreaking for this new project is expected to take place in early 2021.
