From time to time, you hear about stories about people getting into fights and arguments whenever a seat in an economy class section of a plane is reclined. Due to the extremely limited space, it is understandable that people can get a bit sensitive when others encroach on in their space when there wasn’t that much to begin with.
This also creates a problem for travelers who are looking to nap, since seats can’t be reclined too much, most people have to sleep sitting (nearly) upright. However, Air New Zealand thinks that they might have the answer to that problem, and have announced their plans for creating bunk bed-like seats for travelers in economy class.
The airline company has filed a patent for the design which they are calling the Economy Skynest. As you can see in the photo above, this basically creates bunk beds where travelers can lie down fully and take a nap. While not as spacious or luxurious compared to business or first class, it seems to be more than sufficient at getting the job done.
That being said, don’t expect to see these seats for a while. This is because at the moment, there are still some hurdles to overcome, such as regulatory ones. Also, if it were implemented, it would only be used for long haul flights. There is no word on how much these seats could cost customers, but it sounds like a pretty good idea.
