One of the new features that Apple introduced to iOS 14 is the ability to change certain default apps, such as your browser and email client. However, that’s pretty much where they stopped, but interesting enough, Facebook is pushing Apple to make further changes where they are hoping that Apple could be convinced to allow default messaging apps to be changed as well.

Obviously Facebook isn’t doing this for the sake of iOS users as the company is apparently hoping that by Apple allowing these changes that users would use Messenger as the default messaging app. Speaking to The Information (paywall), Stan Chudnovsky, a Facebook VP was quoted as saying, “We feel people should be able to choose different messaging apps and the default on their phone. Generally, everything is moving this direction anyway.”

That being said, we have to wonder how feasible this plan really is, or if it is even practical to begin with. This is because when it comes to messaging apps, users have different apps for different purposes. For example, some might choose to use Telegram for work or school, or WhatsApp for family and friends, or WeChat when connecting with people living in China or parts of Asia.

This means that there might not necessarily be a default messaging app to begin with. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if this is a feature Apple could bring to iOS in the future, especially based on what we’re seeing, it appears that Apple is starting to allow for deep customization within iOS.
