Apple recently announced some changes that they would be making to the App Store. These changes would basically allow game streaming services onto its platform, which sounds like a good thing, but there is a catch that would make it infinitely more difficult for developers to do so.

Despite it seeming like a good thing, Microsoft appears to be less than thrilled about it. In a statement made to The Verge, a spokesperson was quoted as saying, “This remains a bad experience for customers. Gamers want to jump directly into a game from their curated catalog within one app just like they do with movies or songs, and not be forced to download over 100 apps to play individual games from the cloud. We’re committed to putting gamers at the center of everything we do, and providing a great experience is core to that mission.”

For those learning about this for the first time, basically the new rules state that while game streaming services will be allowed, all titles that are in the service’s catalogue will also need to be listed individually in the App Store. The idea is that this would allow Apple to review these games to ensure that they comply with Apple’s own set of rules and guidelines.

However, as you can imagine, this can be tricky because it would mean that developers would need to submit all their games to the App Store to be reviewed. Those who don’t won’t have their games made playable, which in turn can affect the appeal of the streaming services.
