We had recently heard the rumors that Apple was looking to revive the MagSafe branding, which in the past was typically reserved for the company’s laptop chargers. Turns out the rumors were correct because at Apple’s iPhone 12 event, the company has announced a new magnetic wireless charging system for the iPhone 12 which they are calling MagSafe as well.

Unlike the AirPower charging mat, it seems that Apple will be relying on magnets to wirelessly charge its new iPhones, similar to how the charging system used by the Apple Watch. This will help deal with issues like users not placing their mobile devices over the charging coils, leading to a lot of fidgeting and sometimes not realizing that their devices aren’t being charged.

However, this MagSafe charging system isn’t just about a charger, it will also apply to both first-party and third-party accessories. Apple has unveiled a bunch of new official cases designed for the iPhone 12 will come with magnets built into them. This means that users can use the MagSafe charger through the covers.

What this also means, and has been confirmed by Apple, they will not be shipping power adapters with the new iPhones. Apple claims that by not including the chargers, they can reduce the amount of packaging they use, which in turn means that more iPhones can fit on a single pallet, thus allowing them to ship more iPhones at once.

There is currently no word on how much the new MagSafe charger will cost or its official accessories, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
