Earlier we reported that during an interview with The Independent, Apple’s SVP of software engineering Craig Federighi seemed to have shut down the rumors that Apple is developing a touchscreen-based Mac. He certainly did not mince words nor was he being coy about it, where he flat out said that Apple was “not remotely considering something about touch”.

However, according to a tweet by Louie Mantia Jr., he stumbled across an animated graphic on the Mac App Store where it shows a hand touching and interacting with what looks like a stylized version of macOS. Despite Federighi’s comments, this has sparked a debate on Twitter as to whether or not a touchscreen-based Mac could be in the works.

Apple has since removed the animated graphic and replaced it with a static one without the hand, but a video was captured preserving the original, which you can see below. It seems odd that Apple would even bother creating such a design and letting it be approved in the first place, so we’re not quite sure what’s going on here.

In a way, a touchscreen-based Mac almost makes sense given that the new M1 Mac computers can run iPhone and iPad apps natively. At the same time, using a touchscreen computer like a laptop or desktop does feel a little odd and not particularly intuitive, so it also makes sense that Apple isn’t keen on heading down that path. In any case, what do you think?
